Role of Science Fair in a Family

Science fair is an annual activity in school. It is when a student or a child makes and presents a science fair project. It is when a student or a child gives his or her best shot to win such contest. And behind all of these are the parents who has the 'all-out' support for their child.

In our world nowadays, it is a fact that kids do spend more time with computers, laptops, or any any kinds of gadget. Spending time with their parents at home has lost its popularity anymore. Gone are those days when parents and child sit sown together, laugh together, or even make a little discovery out of simple things together.

Why such in a moment parents and child become science buddies? It is because of the science fair. How did science fair make them as science buddies? It is because of the following:
  • Parents are their 1st cheerers and audience.
  • Parents supports their child all the way.
  • Parents give their child motivation.
  • Parents allow them to be positive in thinking.
  • Parents listen to their ideas and explanation.
  • Parents will help their child discover their own interests rather that the parents' interests.
  • Parents teach them how to get things right.
  • Parents make science projects so simple.
  • Parents help their child win but already declared them as the winner in their own way.
Science fair is known to be a fearful activity for some students. But for others, it is not and should be not because it is just the time when a child showcases his or her talents with the help of their parents.

Somehow, science fair helps in family relationships. It gives time for parents and kids to talk and share ideas together. It makes parents and child makes great discoveries from simple things. It makes parents and child as science buddies.

The Longest Lasting Battery

All 8th grade science projects are conducted to solve a particular problem. It undergoes an scientific experiment, and once proved and results are accumulated, a conclusion is given.

An example of a good 8th grade science fair project is to determine which battery lasts longer. Different brands of batteries will be tested and with the results, the longer-lasting battery will be identified. With this 8th grade science fair experiment, you will be able to find if the price of the battery has something to do with its power.

PROBLEM
Which battery lasts the longest out of four different brands namely: Duracell, Energizer, Eveready and Panasonic?

HYPOTHESIS
It is assumed that he Duracell battery will last the longest because it is the most expensive one.

MATERIALS
  • four flashlights of the same type, size and brand.
  • 2 pcs. D-size Duracell
  • 2 pcs. D-size Energizer
  • 2 pcs. D-size Eveready
  • 2 pcs. D-size Panasonic
  • two other D-size batteries to test each flashlight before starting the tests.
PROCEDURE
  1. Prepare all the materials needed.
  2. Test each of the flashlights by using the two test batteries.
  3. After testing, put the different batteries in each flashlight.
  4. Label each flashlight with the battery brand name.
  5. Turn on all the flashlights at the same time.
  6. Leave them on overnight.
  7. Note down the time that the flashlights were turned on.
  8. Make a monitoring form and check the flashlights hourly. If it is still on, just put a check mark on the time at the monitoring form.
  9. Watch the flashlights until they go out and will record the time.
RESULTS / ANALYSIS OF DATA

As long as the flashlight stayed lit and the length of time has been kept tracked until all of them goes off, then the experiment will show which battery will outlast all of the other batteries.

CONCLUSION
You may be able to come-up with a conclusion which battery lasted longer among the four and if its price affects its longer power. In this experiment, Duracell battery last the longest, thereby matching the hypothesis.
